Net Zero Energy Modern Farm
SSA’s recent project, the Net Zero Energy Modern Farm is set on a fertile 20 acre parcel of land outside of Boulder, CO. The house will be constructed with a super-insulated envelope and will incorporate a wind turbine, on-site photovoltaics, and a geothermal mechanical system to achieve its Net-Zero energy goals. The residence benefits from a South orientation that allows high performance triple glazed windows to passively emit solar energy into the living space. The super-insulated envelope helps conserve the energy generated in the home's active and passive systems. Electrical loads are reduced throughout the building and mechanical systems to align with the output of the solar generation systems.
To date, this house is proud to carry the best HERS rating ever in Boulder County with a -29 rating.
The linear structure of the house is accented with two daylight monitors and an expansive clerestory running the full extent of the common living area. The interior of the Net Zero Energy Modern Farm will use FSC certified (sustainably forested) engineered wood flooring, large format porcelain tile flooring and natural fiber carpeting over radiant floor heating, as well as LED lighting integrated into a whole house, low voltage home automation system. Contemporary detailing accents the simplicity and functionality of the home.Long term plans for the property include developing the upper portion into an orchard and leasing land to a sustainable farming operation. For these purposes, two agricultural outbuildings are also included in the project.
